The solar rebate just got ten times bigger for business

The federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme is expanding from a 100 kW cap to 1 MW. That means businesses, farms, schools and community organisations can finally install a properly sized rooftop system and still claim the upfront discount, cutting around 20 per cent off the install cost.

100 kWThe old system size limit

Larger energy users were locked out of the rebate that millions of households have used since 2011.

1 MWThe new limit, ten times larger

Big commercial roofs can now carry a system that actually matches how much power the site uses.

Around 20%Off the upfront install cost

The discount comes straight off your install price. No separate application, no waiting for a cheque.

Starts 1 October 2026, subject to the necessary regulations being in place. Systems designed and approved early get installed first.
What it is worth

Real numbers for a real roof

Figures published by the Minister for Climate Change and Energy on 5 August 2026. Your actual discount and savings depend on your site, roof and usage pattern, which is exactly what our free assessment works out.

250 kW system

Around $68,000Off the upfront install

Generates roughly 345 MWh a year, around $50,000 a year off electricity for a medium sized business such as a retailer.

500 kW system

Around $136,000Off the upfront install

Enough to power a small manufacturing site that runs plant and machinery through the day.

850 kW system

Around $175,000Saved every year

Produces about 1,173 MWh a year, suited to an industrial energy user with heavy daytime load.

Who qualifies

If you have a big roof and a big power bill, this is for you

Australian homes have installed 22 GW of rooftop solar. Business has managed only about 5.6 GW, almost all of it under 100 kW. This change is aimed squarely at that missing middle.

  • Manufacturers and industrial sites running plant through daylight hours
  • Farms and agricultural operations with sheds, pumps and cold storage
  • Retailers, warehouses and logistics centres with large flat roofs
  • Schools, childcare centres and hospitals with steady weekday load
  • Clubs, churches and community facilities looking to cut running costs
  • Commercial landlords lifting the value and appeal of a tenanted building
No new red tape. The discount runs through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, administered by the Clean Energy Regulator, the same scheme behind household solar and the Cheaper Home Batteries program. It is federal, so it sits alongside any state support you qualify for.

Common questions

When does the expansion start?

The expanded scheme is expected to commence from 1 October 2026, subject to the necessary regulations being in place.

Do I have to apply for anything?

No separate government application. The discount is delivered through certificates created by your installation and comes off your install price.

Can I combine it with state rebates?

Yes. The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme is a federal scheme and is separate from state run rebate programs.

Why get a design now if it starts in October?

Network connection approvals and system design take time, and every commercial installer in the state will be booked out from day one. Getting designed and approved early is how you install early.

What if my roof cannot fit 1 MW?

Most sites do not need it. The point is that you are no longer forced to undersize a system to stay under 100 kW. We size to your consumption, not to a cap.
